Anyone that has traveled through my hometown will never forget seeing Monument Peak or "Finger Mountain" as it is affectionately called by the locals. When I was growing up it was like a compass: you always knew where you were in relation to home thanks to it.

I've heard it said that home is where the heart is
My heart tells me there's no place like home
I spend life on the road in this crazy music biz
I travel all over, but my heart will never roam

No matter the direction or the route that I seek
From 85 miles out I can see that mighty peak
The closer I get across the tumbleweeds and dunes
To that great big finger pointing at the moon

Majestic and mighty as old as the earth
Calling me back since the time of my birth
I’m proud of that place where I’m never alone
Finger mountain in the middle of the desert
That I call my home

The spirits of the The First Nations linger
By the rock that’s our compass, that looks like a finger
You'll read in a book that it's called Monument Peak
But not in the old languages, only this one that we speak

And to the Four Tribes, it’s much more than a name
It's canyons, trails and waterholes add to the fame
It rises above us like a vision from a fable
But not quite as famous as that mighty Tower of Babel
