The Poston Internment Camp was the largest of the ten American concentration camps operated by the War Relocation Authority during World War II. Poston was built on the Colorado River Indian Reservation, over the objections of the Tribal Council, who refused to be a part of doing to others what had been done to their tribe. However, Army commanders and officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs overruled the Council.

Young Billy was turning ten
He walked home from a Little League game
Joking around with his friends
Saw his daddy standing on the front porch steps
He didn’t ask about the game
He said our country wants us to move somewhere
No, their lives would never be the same

Like baseball and apple pie
A lemonade stand on a warm summer night
A picnic on the 4th of July
Blue summer skies and tears in their eyes

Crammed into a barracks in the Poston Camp
Nothing there seemed to make sense
White blowing sand in the desert heat
Guards and a barbed wire fence
Long, weary years as prisoners
With other huddled families

But their crime was being Japanese
